Triangle Trust

We are a small independent grant-making trust that operates across the United Kingdom. We run two grant rounds each year through our open grants programme. We focus on young people and are currently funding work in the criminal justice sector that helps to reduce reoffending rates and first offences for those at risk of offending.

I would advise them to check that they meet the eligibility criteria before applying and that they have an option to contact the trust if they have any questions before submission. I would also let them know that the grant application process is quite straightforward and doesn't take a long time in comparison to other applications. They will be asked for key information relating to their organisation and that they are able to save and return to their application if required. .

We found the Small Grants Programme application process to be clear and supportive. All of the questions were relevant to both our current work and our future plans, and the process was not overly time-consuming. We are hopeful that our application will be viewed favourably. Nonetheless, we recognise that funding organisations such as the Triangle Trust are frequently oversubscribed and operate within highly competitive funding environments. Accordingly, this application forms one component of our broader and diversified funding strategy, through which we seek to ensure the long-term sustainability and impact of our programmes.

They make the process of checking out eligibility very easy, preventing applicants from developing applications that are not relevant to their critera.

If you had one piece of advice to give to this funder (about grantmaking or anything else), what would it be?

While our experience of the Small Grants Programme has been highly positive, there are opportunities to further enhance accessibility and engagement, particularly for organisations and community groups that may not currently be part of established funding networks. Actively encouraging applications from a broader range of groups and communities could help ensure that funding opportunities reach those who may be less familiar with such programmes. This might include widening the distribution of publicity materials, promoting funding opportunities through diverse communication channels, and collaborating with local voluntary and community sector (VCS) organisations, local authorities, and infrastructure bodies to raise awareness. In addition, smaller or emerging organisations would benefit from clear guidance on where they can access local support in developing their funding bids — for example, through VCS support agencies, local councils, or regional development networks. Providing this information could help build capacity and confidence among organisations that may have limited experience with formal funding applications. Finally, publishing more detailed information about the profile of successful applicants, along with examples of achieved outputs and outcomes from previous funding rounds, would help prospective applicants better understand what constitutes a strong proposal and the types of impact that are valued. This increased transparency would not only demystify the process but also contribute to a more equitable and informed applicant pool.

We have just completed stage one of the application. The guidance online is very clear and the application form was fairly standard and of a fair length given the amount of funding we were able to bid for. Make sure you investigate the online information fully - I really liked that the funder is very clear around timelines and there is clarity around the process.

Please see above comments. I particularly appreciated the timelines and clarity around how the bid will be assessed and how long the process will take. I did not have to email for further information - everything I needed to know was on the website.

How successfully do you think this funder is accomplishing its goals as a funder?

This is a first application for us, so it is hard to say at this stage. It would have been good to see some examples of previous successful grantees for small grants.

The online information around the process and funding available is excellent and very clear.

If you had one piece of advice to give to this funder (about grantmaking or anything else), what would it be?

Please support small grassroots, lived experience, charities who serve women and girls. According to Rosa's study, carried out by Sheffield University, we get the smallest amount of the national funding pot available to charities, but the work we carry out is so valuable. The study can be found here: https://rosauk.org/publications/mapping-research/ I note that the second stage of the application is a 2-3 hour meeting online. For small charities like ours, this is a big chunk of time for our part time CEO to set aside.

Is there anything else that's be useful for others to know to understand this funder?

It is hard to comment on our relationships with funder at this stage, so I have given an average score, as 'N/A' was not an option.
