I had a helpful initial conversation with someone from Tudor Trust - they were civil rather than friendly but gave me some helpful pointers as to how to demonstrate that we meet their core requirements for funding. Their website is clear and helpful. It was good to know it was a two-stage application so you didn't have to produce an indepth project plan straight away. It seemed straightforward to write an introductory letter and answer the five given questions about our community work, but it was a hard task to articulate everything concisely and stick to the number of pages asked for. In the end, it was a time-consuming job so I was very disappointed when I learned that our application was rejected at the first stage and there was no feedback given for this at all. Their email said they do not have the capacity to give individual feedback at the first stage. I would exercise caution before applying to this funder again because it took a lot of time and effort and I didn't learn anything from the experience due to the lack of meaningful feedback.

If you had one piece of advice to give to this funder (about grantmaking or anything else), what would it be?
Please take time to give feedback - even if terse - at the first stage. It does take time and effort to put together the information you've asked for. You say our application has been "carefully assessed by our Grants Team and a member of our Trustee Committee" - they must have had a word or two to say about why you couldn't proceed with our application. Could we please know what that word or two was at least?
How was your relationship overall with the funder?
Poor
Is there anything else that's be useful for others to know to understand this funder?
Someone else told me that this funder is wonderful - relational, helpful and supportive. Perhaps if you manage to win through the application process you can access some great support. For us, unfortunately, we knocked our heads on a brick wall.

Funded for greater amount - applied in 2022
The funder is very approachable and appreciates transparency. They are open to hearing about the challenges our organisation is facing, so don't be afraid to be upfront about your needs. In fact, I think they would be more receptive to a proposal that clearly outlines the challenges we're tackling.

Highly recommend Tudor Trust. Funding application process is not too onerous. Have had great communication with grant manager. Have been flexible with payments according to our organisations need. Appreciate how they are values based. And trying to embed racial justice in everything they do.

Have been really pleased with how grant manager has always communicated and responded promptly and understood our needs. The application process was easily understood and appreciated for not being onerous. All application stages were smooth and enough information was provided so we knew what to provide and how to
How successfully do you think this funder is accomplishing its goals as a funder?

Really appreciate what Tudor Trust is trying to accomplish in a world that is broken and needs healing. Their values resonated with our organisations and what our mission and vision is. We have been fortunate to have been funded by different funders and have found that Tudor Trust has been the most friendly, open and values led funder. Really pleased on how they are trying to make a difference to embed social justice.

In the past I have found them a great funder, but currently they have closed for an unknown time period. While it's understandable for a funder to want to close to new applications to review their giving strategy, to delay reopening with no firm indication of when this might change is really disappointing - especially as it seems they are still open to giving continuation funding to current grantees. This seems very unfair and exclusionary and is really unfortunate at such a challenging time for fundraising.

Wellbeing grants are an added bonus and give us a specific fund to ensure staff can take time to manage their wellbeing

Ensure that emails are responded to promptly - there have been delays at times for crucial responses.
