We are a specialist grant-maker. We mainly support work to strengthen financial integrity in the UK and tackle the UK’s dirty money problem. We have a history of supporting high potential UK non-profits which make a difference in low income countries. We take an engaged approach, as a proactive funder.

They will have done their research and know about you, and ask pertinent and perceptive questions. Once they have decided to support you, they will do this both financially and in other ways, through suggestions, introductions, networking events etc.

My experience is from 8 years ago so I am out of date with their current way of working but my feedback would be to be well prepared, to ensure they are inline with the charity objectives.

Keep in contact with the Director as this informal advice is valuable. Because the amounts are so small don't worry too much about the detail - provide the strategic information the Director advises and don't give detail that is unnecessary as it may only raise issues with the board that are not always relevant to the situation on the ground.

The stated goals of Joffe are extremely important and fill a vital gap. The Joffe staff are very experienced and implement the mission with vision and clarity. The process with the board felt a little too onerous given the small amounts being provided.

1 - Challenges you to think about real outcomes.
2 - Fills essential gaps in the funders network.
3 - Plays a critical role in reaching out to new and smaller groups outside the small group of recipients who can monopolize the current funders - and assist you to understand and navigate this ecosphere, especially where you have capacity constraints or lack the experience of the usual applicants.
4- funding is flexible - which is very valuable
5 - Is willing to take calculated risks (see 3)
6 - Can help scale up powerful initiatives in ways other funders (unfortunately) don't do (see 3 and 5 above).
